The families stayed in ramshackle huts and tenting for the time they spent there. and a LOT went.(at the time)

In the old days whole families used to go from London to kent for the "Hopping"- they treated it as a working holiday for 3 weeks or so- and were paid to pick the whole crop. (the kids ran wild)
