In the later years of WWII the united states needed a high-altitude longrange bomber that could carry a huge payload of bombs.It also was preasurized and climatized.It mainly was used to bombard Japan in the late years of WWII.

@Ssirrahh- I think that not all were silver, they are just perceived that way because most pictures show them like that. There were probably some with paintjobs like this.
