Description
Allosaurus fragillis is one of the best known and best studied of all theropods, known from both adults and younger specimens. It was one of the most common and also one of the largest predators found from the Morrison Formation. Studies on jaw mechanics showed Allosaurus had a massive gape, and that its jaws were well suited for a slashing attack, although it still bore large arms. Allosaurus usually grew up to 30 feet long, however some have suggested 40, and this would certainly be the case if animals like Epanterias and Saurophaganax became included in Allosaurus. Perhaps somewhat confusingly, a large degree of variation has been seen among Allosaurus which indicates that perhaps some animals formerly attributed to A. fragillis actually are deserving of their own species.
