you could also just make the captain as big as possible and everything else really small, but you won't hear the stomping sounds when you walk like you would if your captain was an epic.

The only way to make a captain epic-sized is if you mod the game. However, you could download a template adventure where the creator has already done this and made the captain an epic. That way you won't have to download a mod.
