Description
These beetles, despite their desert appearance, actually inhabit beaches and shorelines. They feed on seaweed that relieved of its grip on the seafloor, and on subterranean worms. They sometimes live in colonies, but are more often found solitary. However, gregarious relationships are far more beneficial to the species and their safety. In addition to the obvious virtue of strength in numbers, living in colonies also protects them against fierce waves. When harsh waves threaten a colony, they interlock their legs and face their heads toward the oncoming threat. Where a single organism would be washed away, the groups take advantage of the onslaught to capture precious kelp and hapless animals.
