Description
The Ashthi are a race of sentient beings native to the planet Aerdrol. Like most sentient life forms evolved from a quadrupedal ancestor, the Ashthi are bipedal. Ashthi originally evolved bipedality to blend in to their forest environment, which is filled with tall crystalline trees. Their upright stature and pinkish color allowed them to virtually disappear. Another bonus of evolving upright was having the front paws freed for other uses. Although ancient Ashthi ancestors were evolved for tree life (which is why they still have a near-vestigial climbing tail), more recent Ashthi ancestors used their front paws to snap up passing prey, much like a praying mantis. Over time, these mantis-like creatures evolved into social beings which used their wits and cunning to trap less intelligent forest dwelling species. These later evolved into the Ashthi. Current Ashthi, although they haven't quite developed settled civilizations, use their intellect to their advantage by colonizing many environments about the globe.

Tactian: Their tails are mostly just for balance (or for stabbing, if need be). Distant ancestors of theirs used their tails for climbing, and more recent relatives stand still until something unfortunate wanders by. Ashthi themselves are pack hunters.

So they could use their tails to sit on the bark of the Crystal tree's, pretending to be a branch, then snatch prey. Right?
