Description
From Wing CommanderThe Dragon Super Fighter, developed after 2670, became the most advanced spacecraft to see space, surpassing even the F-103 Excalibur. Black Lance oversaw the illegal and secret creation of this fighter. The project proceeded without knowledge or approval by the Confed government and its taxpayers. The Dragon employed a deadly arsenal of weapons that often included plasma guns, tachyon cannons, and sometimes fission guns, devices that engineers at the time had thought were impossible to operate with a fighter?s power plant. A few pilots that survived engagements against Dragons described them as veritable fountains of hard hitting munitions and occasionally mines. The Dragons also made use of controversial Flash-Paks to burn crews alive in their own ships. Dragons displayed impressive speed and handling equal to that of the Excalibur, were jump capable, and featured cloaking devices. The Dragon embodied the cruel and merciless personality the Black Lance became notorious for, and dealt the worst blows of the crisis. During the Black Lance Conspiracy of 2673, Dragons raided targets in both the Terran Confederation and the Union of Border Worlds, strikes aimed to instigate war in a mad attempt to permanently militarize the species, an achievement likened to the culture of the now-defeated Kilrathi. One notable attack involved several civilian transports including the TCS Amadeus, a medical ship evacuating refugees from the Hellespont System. The lead Dragon, flown by Seether, effortlessly destroyed the transport's fighter escorts and then used a Flash-Pak. The attack was repeated on nearby transports and filled the subspace radio waves with hours of screaming. The attacks escalated old tensions between the two sides. The Union had long resisted inclusion into Confed, and the Confed remained angry at the Union?s lack of substantial support during the Terran-Kilrathi War. Many Confed citizens and military personnel, who were not familiar with the Dragon, erroneously assumed that these unmarked vessels came from the Border Worlds. The Great Assembly on Earth was due to convene. In the unlikely event the Confed did not vote for war, the Black Lance also performed strikes upon the Border Worlds. Seether led an attack on FT957, a small Border Worlds colony in the Telamon System. They deployed the Genselect Bioweapon, which released nanobots programmed to compare one's DNA with standards set arbitrarily by the Black Lance. 90% of the colonists were slaughtered by the mechanical disease. Many in the Union blamed the Confed and motions were made for war, throwing the government into chaos. Border Worlds forces on the BWS Intrepid, led by Colonel Christopher Blair, a former Confed pilot that had defected as he began to learn the truth behind the Black Lance Conspiracy, acquired a few Dragons from a Black Lance transport in the Speradon System. The Border Worlds engineers reverse engineered them for Blair and his wing. Blair led numerous sorties to gather evidence and halt Black Lance attacks, and eventually located a massive Black Lance starbase. Upon boarding he learned the enemy had acquired the TCS Vesuvius, a new supercarrier fresh from the shipyards, and unbelievably, that war hero and admiral Geoffry Tolwyn had masterminded the conspiracy. Blair and his comrades raced to the Sol System. In a series of events that nearly had Blair arrested or killed multiple times, including a death duel with Seether, Blair finally revealed Tolwyn's treachery to the Great Assembly which consequently rejected the call to war and averted the crisis. At the Conspiracy?s conclusion all surviving Dragons were decommissioned. Their use had never been approved by Confed, and the craft?s reputation was permanently tainted by acts of genocide and terror. Salvage of the fighter?s technology also proved fruitless, as most of the existing ones had been destroyed during the final engagements.
