A common complaint from pilots about the Epee is its extremely light armor, which the Ferret made up for. Main weaponry of the Ferret was a pair of mass drivers. While not as long ranged as the particle beams on the Epee, the weapons are very reliable and effective. The only real complaint about the Ferret was the patrol fighter mounted no missile hard points. Conversely, the older (yet more expensive) Epee mounted four missile hardpoints and could even be equipped with a torpedo for unique situations.But the Ferret's popularity persisted. Later, the Ferret would see an end to its "official" status as a second-rate fighter. The Confederation introduced an upgraded version of the Ferret, the P-64D "Super Ferret" in the year 2667. Improvements in this "Super Ferret" included improved flight systems and the addition of a pair of heat-seeking missiles. Even with these upgrades, the "Super Ferret" was still far less expensive to manufacture than the complex and fragile Epee.
