The Azi Dahaka are believed by many religious societies to be of cursed souls sent to the underworld. After thousands of years of punishment the Azi Dahaka found a way to regain a physical form and escape their otherworldly prison to wreak havoc on all who cross their path.(Thanks to shekbo for catching my horrible spelling, I'm an engineer so let's just say spelling is not my strong point.)
