Exeters served in major battles, planetary sieges, and amphibious assaults. They also served as armored transports for dignitaries. The TCS Perez de Cuellar and TCS U Thant ferried dipolmats to Firekka. The TCS Tiger's Claw's battle group Delta included an Exeter. The destroyers carried a single squadron of eighteen light and medium fighters, often including Hornets and Rapier IIs. Other notable Exeters included the TCS Formidable, where Christopher Blair served his cadet cruise, and the TCS Gwenhyvar, which was captured by the Kilrathi and used to destroy other human ships in 2655. Exeters were classified officially as destroyers, but were often referred to colloquially as battleships. Exeters were not particularly strong when faced by a massive starfighter ambush from the Kilrathi, and as a result pilots from other vessels often had to aid in their defense in such an incident. Exeters were eventually replaced by the more powerful Gilgamesh-class Destroyers during the 2660s, but remaining Exeters served at least until the end of the Kilrathi War.
