Black Dragons are denizens of swamps and marshy forested environments. They are an amphibious species capable breathing freely both in and out of water. Their wings are adapted for use both in flight and in the water making them exquisite swimmers. They make their dens inside of deep caves and subterranean caverns, forging entrances for themselves either below the surface of a swampy pool or concealed by thorny tangled vegetation. They reek of the swamplands in which they live, and have an affinity for the stench of rot and decay. They will heap mounds of rotting vegetation in their lairs, basking in the malodor, warmth and humidity of the decomposition. Like all dragons they are masterfully intelligent and cunning, which in their case is twisted by a sinister malevolence and guile. Black Dragons are ambush predators and will stalk a quarry for days if need be learning their habits and their vulnerabilities silently gliding through the muck waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Often taking the rear guard of the party, suddenly and silently pulling them down into the mire to face their death in the flash of a moment when none will see, making no sound and leaving barely a ripple in the putrid water. Black Dragons do not breathe fire as some of their cousins do but rather spray a highly corrosive acid from glands positioned at the roofs of their mouths on their attackers and prey. A favorite tactic of the beasts is to gravely injure a victim and then immobilize them, perhaps by crushing their legs beneath a large boulder or impaling them in the branches of a tree. Then allowing the screams of fear and anguish to draw the victim?s comrades unsuspectingly to their aid where they can be easily ambushed and slaughtered. Black Dragons eat nothing fresh, disliking the taste of warm meat. Rather they ferment the corpses of their kills in pools of stagnant water within their lairs, aging the carcass until it is putrefied to their pallet before dining on the decaying flesh.
