Description
there were several more eggs where i found this one. when i went to put the rest of them in my carryall, a large feathered boa rose up out of the nest and tried to eat me. thankfully, i managed to get away. when my guide had found me again, i asked him what kind of egg did i have. he answered that legends told of a beautiful bird that laid eggs that looked like the one I had. this piqued my curiosity, and i asked him about the legend. he said that he didnt know much, but when we got back to the village i could ask the tribal medicine man. dissatisfied, i went along and left it that-at least, for awhile. i was determined to learn about my find. when we got back to the village after successfully completing our survey mission, i asked my guide to take me to the medicine man. he agreed after a goodly sum was donated to the cause. late the next night we set off again, this time heading for the medicine man's last known location.it took us several days to track down the medicine man. according to my guide, we were lucky to find him so soon. i wondered privately after meeting him whether it was luck or whether it was him deliberately being found.
when we found him, he ignored my guide and came right up to me. "you are fortunate," he said "to have found the nest of Huitzequotal, the Great Jungle Bird. such things are legends made of." i asked him why. in response he told me the legend of the Huitzequotal. after this many years and many adventures passed, most of which are stories in their own right. It was during this particular adventure that the Huitzequotal finally reached maturity. the man, now getting on in his years, had been exploring a part of the jungle that the locals had been purported by the local villagers to be haunted. when he reached the center of the 'haunted' area, he found offworlders logging the huge trees that are the tranquil heart of any forest. being filled with a vast anger, he went and attacked the invaders. having the element of surprise and what was by now a huge feathered serpent, he managed to drive most of them back into their ships. one of the more gun-happy ones managed to squeeze off a parting shot. the man would have been killed, had not his faithful companion taken the shot for him-but at a price. his beloved companion of many years recieved the mortal wound instead. the man was broken hearted. he opened a deep hole in the ground, as was custom for the most honored warriors in his native village and gave his friend back to the jungle. as he pushed the last of the dirt back into the hole, an amazing thing happened. roots sprang from the ground, and shaped itself into the form of a huge bird. the ends of the roots that tied it to the ground snapped, and the roots in the air continued to shape themselves until they were a solid, seamless creature: a great bird with huge wings, a long flowing tail, and strangely enough no legs. the man stared, transfixed. the great bird ghosted over and brushed the mans face with its long, soft feathers. then it sailed away, and the man never saw it again. and thats where Sarugano, the storyteller, died.
