One of the first generation of supersonic bombers, the Tu-22 'Blinder' suffered through serious issues concerning the stresses of sustained supersonic speeds. Never easy to fly, or easy to maintain, the original Blinder-A variants were inferior to the Tu-16s they were intended to replace and the program nearly fell victim to the massive strategic restructuring under Nikita Khrushchev. Ultimately, the Blinder was reassigned as a cruise-missile carrier. Designated Tu-22K (Blinder-B), the aircraft served in both DA (Strategic Aviation) and AVMF (Naval Aviation). Reconnaissance/Bomber versions (Tu-22R, Blinder-C) served in the air forces of both Libya and Iraq. Iraqi Blinders saw combat in operations against Iran during the Iran-Iraq war, several being lost to friendly fire and operational attrition. The survivors were destroyed by Coalition forces in 1991. All Blinders in the former Soviet Union were retired in the 1990s.
