Description
The Tupolev Tu-95 is an icon of the cold war - the world's only turboprop powered bomber, the Bear was initially dismissed by military experts because of it's unique propulsion. But while the Myasishchev M-4 Bison that caused such a stir during its May Day debut in 1954 was withdrawn from frontline service in 1961, the Bear remains in use to this day and is expected to remain in use until at least 2040. The Bear also holds an informal record as the noisiest aircraft in service - Bear crewmen frequently suffer from permanent hearing loss. The "growl of the Bear" can be clearly heard by intercepting pilots through their canopies and over the noise of their own engines. It's even been reported that submarines are able track passing Bears over their passive sonar systems!
