Gave it cell stuff to use for your own drone if you like, otherwise feel free to remove them for more complexity) Drones are capable of adapting to a variey of enviornments, but what makes them truely unique is they can also bind to other creatures, taking on their traits and starting a symbiotic relationship. Even more remarkable is the fact that the drones make a telepathic bond with whatever creature they bind with, no matter their physiology, and take on some of the personality and nature of the creature or enviornment. It is believe that these drones were intentionally created by an old empire, specifically the Crystalit, to make excellent servants for any race. The drones will do all kind of simple work for those it binds to in return for protection for food for the hives' needs, and for protection of them and especially their queen. Also the fact that drones have inhabited a large portion of the galaxy, and are especially common at its center enforce the theory that it was specifically the Crystalit that engineered these creatures and circulated them over their empire. When a hive reaches critical capacity they will often expell their drones to fend for themselves found their own coloy (since these creatures are asexual)before they bind to the other drones of their colony. These unbound larva are sold all over galactic populations to those who many want a useful colony of municipals that loyaly serve as long as they recieve protection. The binding process involves the drones sampling their enviornment, or taking some of the hosts DNA and telepathically linking to the bindees mind. Any drone larva is capable of becoming a queen if no other drones of its hive are detected within a certain radius.
