Then again, I could make the achivements unavoidable, like they're awarded for completing a mission critical objective. For example: an achievement for killing a large boss creature that must be killed to proceed.

This is not a bad idea acually: I might do something like this and ask people to comment on it if they managed it. Problem is, how do you keep track of whatever your aiming for?
