One year after the maiden flight of the Kestrel, the Mark 1 and 1a prototypes were logging hundreds of hours of test-flight time and the first Courier models were just about to enter production. Several cargo carriers had made healthy purchase orders, and Pegasus expected the Kestrel to become the new industry standard for courier and light cargo companies in civilized space. The Kestrel development team, however, believed that the ship was ideally suited to fill the growing need for a number of roles in the ever-expanding colonial zones, interstellar backwaters and independent regions, and set about modifying the basic production Mark 1 Kestrel design to include features necessary for these less-developed areas. Pirate activity was common in some of these outlying zones of space, so dorsal and ventral turrets were added, with a small shield generator being placed in a small hump behind the dorsal turret. Ships operating in these less-settled regions would largely be operating on their own, so a high-power communications antenna was added and placed in a housing along the spine of the craft, just forward of the dorsal turret. Overall the new model was largely similar to the Courier which was just being delivered to its first customers, and development progressed quickly. Three months after the flight of the first production Courier, the first Colony Trader began flight testing. Cargo companies that serviced the more rough-and-tumble outlands bought the Colony Trader, but quite a number were sold to small companies and individuals. They quickly became popular among doctors and agricultural veterinarians working in the colonies and missionaries traveling through the hinterlands, as well as a number of independent, unlicensed shippers and traders. The Colony Trader has become the most-modified model of the Kestrel.
