Description
Schale live in large underground communities in symbiosis with a species of bioluminescent bacteria. The light given off by these bacteria is sufficient for the Schale to grow their own food underground and thus remain isolated and independent from the world above.

So then... they're eating themselves. The bacteria get their energy to glow from the Schale, and the Schale use that energy to grow food. It's a circle with a lot of energy loss.
