It definitely has a use in racing, though it can't be very good for much else short of bombers, you could hardly store enough fuel in a single engine plane for this beast to run for any amount of time required for something like a fighter.

Such engines were used on 1920s race aircraft - Macchi M. C. 72 and several Supermarine designs come to mind here.

The driveshaft between the engine and the (oil?) cooler helped a bit, of course - without this , some rather sharp corners would have been required.

I think I might need to think about the propeller a bit - it seems rather small for the engine.

This engine fits more of a 4 engine Lancaster type bomber than a single engine craft, but I'm curious to see what you come up with.
