RX-15-Y
A prototype plasma weapon that fires red balls of plasma at velocities around 900 fps. Although the projectile speed is rather low, (compared to rifles and lasers) its projectile expands, growing larger and larger the farther it goes. To give an example, when it leaves the barrel of the weapon, it is about 45mm in diameter. But 200 meters downrange, it has grown to a diameter of about 90mm, doubling in size. And it continues to grow until it makes contact with a surface. This makes hitting a target at a long range easier.
Air resistance is not an issue due to the projectile being plasma, it feeds off the air allowing it to grow, also resulting in little speed loss that would normally come from air resistance.
It is powered by a miniature nuclear reactor, allowing several thousand shots before any kind of reload.
This is the standard civilian version. Military versions that are colored darker are also available. Developed by the Kawan Species.
