Description
..Covielle, or Coviello, in Italian, is one of the seven main masks of the commedia dell'arte. Already known and loved by the crowd, Coviello was made famous in Rome by Salvator Rosa, who, at Carnival 1639, ventured to don his costume and, under the name Signor Formica, quack occupation amused throughout the city during several days by his jokes, his incisive mind, his epigrams and sallies relentless to the point that he was deserting all the shows, to the most popular. Poet, musician, comedian, full of satirical wit, Salvator, in his chariot of Thespis he renewed, enchanted and revolutionized the Roman popes, as some jugglers and mimes had enchanted the Rome of the Caesars. The people applauded frantically traits satire that he directed against the major, while they took pleasure in hearing him sing to the accompaniment of the lute, which he played beautifully, Neapolitan ballads which then enjoyed a so much in vogue. Salvator, who drew a portrait of Coviello said that his mind must be as subtle as the air of Abruzzo, which gave it birth. Adroit, supple, vain, a kind of Proteus, in his character, his manners, his language, he still retains the accent and the costume of his country. Her black velvet jacket, with pants fabric, decorated with silver buttons and a rich embroidery, were to appear to advantage in size and elegant form a sharp contrast with her cheeks crimson mask, nose and black forehead. This ensures that in the beginning of the nineteenth century, the type of Coviello still appeared occasionally in the canvas of Italian puppets, where he filled a role not unlike that of former Capitan, like his character, his costume was then processed and He wore a black hat plumed three red feathers, a red slashed doublet, breeches of black with a red and yellow kit, a red coat and gloves, boots funnel the belt and sword of Capitan. By moving to the French stage, Coviello became Covielle and Molière was staged in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by a valet, a kind of Gros-René close relative of the heartache.
