Detective Kerl?Molan sat at his desk with his long legs propped up on its surface, stacks of arbitrary paperwork and datapads scattered at his feet and a cup of silicon-compatible black coffee in the cupholder beside him, hallmarks of his evening ritual. Silicon mandibles clicking thoughtfully, Kerl scrolled casually through the holonews pad in his two-fingered claws with minor disinterest. Despite being the best detective in the Cross-Systems Police Squad, work had been slow in previous months. Other than the massive Black Silk bust a few weeks back, most of the cases Kerl had been a part of involved minor smuggling and petty crime. As he read through the news, one article caught his single eye. ?Outer Rim Weapons Expo Disrupted by Mysterious Circumstances, Dozens Unaccounted For as Thunderdome Burns.? The Dzehmuuln read briefly through the article with mild interest as it hinted at Black Ops involvement and the possibility of a Fleshbag attack. As it was purely speculative, Kerl skipped to the article below it. ?Unknown Enemy Forces Causing Problems Along Fringe Territories, Only to be Routed by Military.? Kerl smiled an insectoid grin as he read through the article, written by the Defense Minister himself. Interlopers from outside the Outer Rim were common, and those that managed to break through the first lines of defense met no opposition? only to find that Combine forces had lured them into an inescapable chokepoint. Sources suggested these recent attacks were more potent, but none had breached the Second Line. And that was all the Defense Minister would reveal. The System Mayors and Sector Overlords were continuing to do their jobs quite well, it seemed. Kerl then read a humorous and empowering article about a botched terror attack launched by the Quietus Star Brotherhood on the New Smithsonian, which was beaten back spectacularly by a veteran mech pilot who had obliterated the Quietus Star Zabats with an ancient mech on display that day. As a reward for his heroism, the Engvolas had gotten to keep the mech after some consideration and was invited into the Combine New Army?s Special Forces. Before he could read further, a familiar lanky Synthetic appeared in the doorway of Kerl?s office. ?Detective Molan?? the slender machine asked hesitantly, reluctant to bother the detective upon seeing his superior?s relaxed state. The Dzehmuuln looked up and gave the mechanical policeman a friendly smile. ?I?m here, Loki. Is there something I can do for you? I?m on break, so you can ask me anything.? Despite being of a much lower rank than Kerl, Loki was the detective?s longtime squad mate and friend, and the best damn marksman in his division. He may have looked like a fragile antique from an Old Earth comic book, but Kerl owed the machine his life several times over. The Synthetic gave an artificial sigh of relief. ?Good to here, Kerl. Actually, I came here to let you know that the Chief is calling everyone upstairs for a big meeting or something. I don?t know much of the details, but apparently we got an anonymous tip regarding the ORWE incident a few weeks back. I was told to come fetch you.? Kerl groaned and slid his feet to the floor as he stood up, cursing lightly as several datapads and papers fell to the floor. ?Yeah, sure. Lead the way, Loki.? Neither of them knew, of course, that those first steps out of the office would begin the strangest and most chaotic night of their careers.
