Description
Amphicoelias altus was a large diplodocid from the Jurassic of the Morrison Formation. Although not much is known, what is known shows that it was a diplodocid, comparable to Diplodocus though with a slightly slimmer build and legs slightly proportionally longer. Amphicoelias altus is estimated to reach a length of about 25m. Although it is the holotype for Amphicoelias and known from better material, the other species, Amphicoelias fragilimus, has gained more fame due to its sheer size; some estimates placing it at a length of 60m! However, the original material for Amphicoelias fragilimus has since inexplicably disappeared. In 2010 a paper was being worked on which suggested all known Morrison diplodocids be lumped into the genus Amphicoelias, and creating a new species called Amphicoelias brontodiplodocus. However, very few bought into this idea and the paper was never published, so this was not considered 'official' in the first place.
