Needlebugs are a group comprised mostly of flying Chitinoderms, and have adapted to nearly every environment imaginable on Gaia. Their needle-like proboscis, used for a wide variety of purposes from defense to predation, makes them easy to recognize (hence the moniker). Although similar to the insects on Earth, they are actually a group of carbochordates that evolved a shell of chitin to protect them from predators. A few species still have the skeleton of reinforced carbon fibers characteristic of the carbochordates, though many have lost this trait altogether. Because they have no neck joint, unlike the insects on Earth, they have evolved the capability to swivel their eyes in sockets, and each eye, which can have anywhere from five to three hundred lenses, can move independently. The species illustrated is the Microptera myriada, a poisonous species of needlebug, which get their defensive toxins from the fruit they eat.
