Class: Thermosaura
Superorder: Quadrodactyla
Order: Macrocarnivora
Family: Horrodontidae
Genus and Species: Carnohippus horribilis
The common swamphorse has a body specially adapted for hunting down and catching fish, though it is an opportunist, eating anything from fruit to carrion. Its long legs help camouflage it among the muddy bogs in eastern fagland, its webbed feet helping to give support in the mud, and with its sharp teeth, it strikes its prey with blink-and-you-missed-it speed. This specimen is a fully grown male in musth, a stage of more aggressive activity. The males only experience musth twice a year on Gaia, and during this stage, their skin turns bright red, and their waddle, supposedly a symbol of sexual fitness, triples in size. Females lack said wattle. During the breeding season, the males fight to claim the dominance of female harems, and the winner mates with all the females of the group. However, they would rather flee than fight when a predator is encountered.
