1) It should be something more focused on gameplay. Playing the same stage with different creatures does NOT make it playable after 100 times.
2) It can be something more realistic, but accepts that you are not an evolution simulator.

It's actually a good thing that Darkspore is a whole new game. It starts with a more-or-less blank slate, and might just be worthwhile. It releases for PC in early 2011. Check out the official site at darkspore.com and its ARG, helpedna.com

Darkspore's mechanic is: Pick a warrior, start a mission, fight, collect parts, upgrade and customise your warrior, start a new mission, fight better, collect more, etc, and just have fun doing it all.

In Darkspore, your job is gather an army of genetic warriors, as well as armor, DNA codes and E-DNA to enhance them to fight the Darkspore and purge them from the galaxy with your E-DNA powers.
