Description

Dilophosaurus lived in the early Jurassic, where it was the top predator and grew to 20 feet long. What is interesting is the fact that in the front of the jaw, it has a small notch, similar to that found in Spinosaurs. But what is by far the most interesting and distinctive feature of Dilophosaurus are the two crests on its head, which earned it the name "two-crested lizard". The exact purpose of these crests is unknown, though they were likely used for display. Fossil impressions left by Dilophosaurus sitting down have proved to be of importance. One such fossil showed fossilized impressions of what appear to be feathers, suggesting that it and its relatives were covered in the primitive downy coat. But what is an even greater discovery is that in another such fossil, it showed the hand impressions. These hand impressions showed that even at this primitive stage in evolution, that theropods held their hands with the palms facing inward like a modern bird, rather than with the palms facing down as is often depicted.
