Description
These predators inhabit the frigid, rocky plains of Jubax. They hunt in small packs of of 2-6, usually consisting of breeding pairs. Their favored hunting technique is to form a ring and lie in wait for prey, camouflaged by their coloring. When prey wanders into their circle, the Plain-Striders spring to life, using their large paws to deal crushing blows. If the prey escapes, they are capable of sprinting after it for a time, but cannot go great distances at high speeds because of the heavy paw. The Plain-Strider's shaggy coat helps keep it warm, and the fat reserves on its back are insurance against bad times. Plain-Striders mate for life; after a pregnancy of about 5 months, females usually give birth to 2-5 pups. The young are raised within the pack for about two years, learning how to hunt, before they leave to start their own packs, often consisting of mated pairs of childhood playmates. However, in the case of a very small pack, some of the pups may stay. Also, if a pack member dies, its mate will usually remain in the pack, often taking an offspring of the other couple for a mate. Occasionally, especially in larger packs, a weak individual will be driven out to wander the plains.
