If you are going to unlock the captain, I really recommend keeping the original captain as a starting ally. He can fight good and is balanced for the adventure, so you won't be limiting the adventure to advanced captains or warrior builds.

There weren't many places that you could get messed up by falling. The bridge is the only one I can think of. A slew of invisible teleporters that place you back on the bridge might work without ruining your awesome art.
