Description

Stone Gnomes are just odd creatures. They're not your average garden variety that you'd see in the neighbors ivy or petunias. These little guys generally like quarries and tall rock fomations. Most of the time they are not even noticed as they sit motionless and imitate the surrounding area to blend in during the day time. Spring through Fall is their most active time, Spring for breeding and raising the young. By the time Fall comes they are fatting themselves and finding a place to hold up for Winter. They live all around the world. Sometimes they even move into city buildings and climb to the highest points. They will take perch and sit there, often mistaken for a small gargoyle. In truth they just like the view and warmth of the sun. It is at night when they become active. Even though they are omnivores and do eat insects, they prefer fresh fruit. They will fly miles to find it. They enjoy berries the most and often get into squabbles over bushes when the berries are in season. They can tend to be a bit greedy and gluttonous, stuffing themselves in fear another will eat 'their' berries. Even when full to bursting, they will defend the bush to the last berry. They will vocally carry on screeching threats, sounding like two sparrows fussing over a worm. When daylight breaks, they are already back at their perch, ready to soak up the sun and digest the nights meal, you might even say it is a form of lethargic reaction. This may be due to a slow metabolisim and the berries ferment in their tummy producing a drunken like stupor for them. I guess you could say it's like 'Gnome-nip'. As the seasons change so do their habits, in the fall they start putting on extra weight to endure the cold lean time of Winter since they do not migrate. Winter time is often brutal for them and they tend to burrow underground or find an open attic to shelter in for warmth and hibernation. It is the only time they will tolerate others in close grouping. Being small they don't have much body heat and if they are caught outside in the cold months, they will more than likely pass from exposure. This is also the time young are born, while the mother is in a self induced comma, much like an Earth bear. She wakes up to a surprise of a youngling attached to her. Twins are very rare as one of the two will out muscle the other for dominance of the sleeping mothers suckling nutrition. When Spring comes and they awaken from the deep Winter slumber, they will venture forth and claim new territory and hunting grounds, thus starting the cycle over again. [Creature design by Al B.
