Description

Successive generations of Zierna grew ever pudgier as their diet, rich in plant oils and carbohydrates unlike the comparatively 'light' food that the Treng consumed, exceeded the capacity of their metabolisms. They also evolved internal body sacs filled with hydrogen gas, which they obtained from digesting their food. The air-filled pouches no doubt contributed to their girth as well, but also allowed them to float a small distance above the sticky swamp goo, allowing better escape from predators and a more advantageous mode of locomotion compared to walking (and possibly stepping in something that one should not step in! A nasty carnivore's maw, for instance... or something more fundamentally disgusting.)

As a result, the Zierna were now more or less floating bags of fat and gas, and had become both biologically and psychologically very different from their Treng cousins. They levitate sluggishly around the boggy surfaces of planet Ylaisis, but most of them never venture far from large fields of fruit-bearing plants, since the greedy Zierna race was becoming increasingly intolerant of hunger by now...

The Treng ship, in the meantime, had long returned to Trengigi to report their findings to the Grand Council. The ship, after all, had to refuel and a new crew had to be selected every few years or so, simply because the homesick Treng could not bear to part from the soils (and community) of Trengigi for too long. Besides, individual Treng could only live for so long, and the evolution of a species could take millions of years... It was the prudent thing to do, and this was perhaps the 100th or so generation which was making the trip; the journey that was evolution was THAT slow, even with the Treng subtly manipulating the growing minds of the Zierna to sow seeds of sentient thought and fragments of their ideal of a greater purpose.

The Treng did not dare entrust automated robotics and machinery with such an important task as one that would determine their destiny and fulfill their purpose for existence! So, as the millenia passed, they sent a never-ending stream of vessels to orbit around Ylaisis to monitor their experiment, with regular changes in shifts every decade or so.
