Carbon is a nonmetallic element that can be recognized on the periodic table under the symbol C and with the number 6. It is the fourth most common element in the universe, after hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. It has three naturally occuring isotopes, 12c, 13c, and 14c, the latter being radioactive and the others stable. It is one of the few elements known since antiquity. Carbon is the second most prevalent element in the human body by mass (around 18.5%), after oxygen. It's abundance is the reason that carbon is the basis of all known life. Carbon is formed when three alpha particules (helium nuclei) collide simultaneously in the core of a giant or supergiant star.
