Description
This was the first major class of armoured cruisers designed and built in Lao Guó. They featured a turbine machinery for 26 ktn and a homogenous main armament of 12 9,2" guns. Sixteen units were comissioned from 1900 to 1904.

Radar was fitted in the 1930s. They are still useful as convoy escorts, coastal defence ships and training ships, as their new machinery made them much more economic and increased speed to 28 ktn.

Their machinery was also changed to eight three-drum small tube boilers, four geared steam turbines and four cruising diesels.

During the 1920s, the original secondary armament of 12 5" guns was replaced by 4x2 4,7" DP guns, offering a much better defence against aircraft and modern destroyers.

They proved to be excellent all-rounders, and even though they were out-gunned by battlecruisers, they were much better balanced ships.
