Description

After an unsuccessful- but immensely satisfying- interrogation of Appolyn Grigori, the Ascendant Sovereign retired to his quarters. He had made sure to interrogate the Xadari alone; He wasn?t ready to reveal the Fleshbag?s identity quite yet. After all, he had publicly described the Fleshbag Plague as nothing more than a swarm of well-organized mindless zombies. As the door to his own quarters on the Marishi opened, the Ascendant Sovereign was greeted by? Nothing. His room was barren, save for the zweihandler ?Obsidious? hanging on the wall. Just the way he liked it. Locking the flat door behind him ?it could only be opened in his presence and with his permission, guaranteeing privacy- the Ascendant crossed to the center of the room. He quite honestly found no joy in what he was about to do, but nonetheless he needed answers. Closing his visor optic, the Ascendant Sovereign immersed himself within a universe of data. Spreading out from him like a spiral galaxy were trillions of files. Focusing on the contact files, he browsed through them at 1,000 a second. Civilians, soldiers, politicians, Opsmen, generals, admirals, allies? Reaching the very edge of the sea of data, he found one in particular blocked by his own firewall. Releasing it, the Ascendant mulled over it for a moment before contacting the address via hologram. Opening his visor, the Ascendant found himself in a stately room decorated like an 18th century Old Earth dining hall. Very elegant, especially for the shadowy individual whose back was turned to the machine. At the sound of the projector, the Xadari Overlord turned around, full well knowing the only one who used that particular device. ?Zero Thirteen? I was just about to contact you. Some soldiers have spawned from the Pool with a story to tell? The undead lord?s voice was cold and monotone. Flinching somewhat at the sound of his actual name, the Ascendant Sovereign replied with as much politeness as he could muster. ?A story of which we are both aware of, I?m sure.? The Machine God paused, before continuing; ?Two days ago, a Xadari mole hacked my hologram and sent five of my best on a suicide mission to Codon, having set a trap with the intent of assimilating them. Yesterday, they all nearly perished at the hands of your Commandant, Miss Grigori. Thankfully they survived, and she is in my custody. Maltzel? This was not our agreement. Our agreement was that in exchange for being allowed to raid the very fringe of the Combine, the Xadari Legion would trade technologies with the Combine.? The Xadari tilted his head. ?I?m afraid I do not understand, Zero. Appolyn was made very aware of the agreement, and I certainly didn?t know of her little plan. And if I had, I would have punished her severely.? Both of the rulers reached the same conclusion. ?Some of your higher echelon seems to have their own priorities then, Maltzel. I?m sure you realize what this means.? A long silence, before Maltzel answered. ?This is an unwelcome development. If Xadari as highly ranked as Appolyn have their own agenda, then our plan is in dire peril. Especially if they have their own mole within your ranks.? ?I will withdraw my own mole. We shall see what else happens within the week. I suggest you disable all hologram accounts within your chain of command for the time being.? The Ascendant nodded. ?I will be watching closely, Maltzel. You should do the same? I have a feeling we have a big problem on our hands.? ?Agreed. I wish you the best of luck, Zero.? The Xadari then added, ?By the way? A rogue A.I. my men have called ?Wraith? has been warping around Xadari space. Might you know anything about this?? The machine instantly waved his claw. ?Of course not. No mech can be in two places at once.? The Ascendant deactivated the projector without another word, and was left to his thoughts. ?A big problem indeed??
