Description
A mysterious plesiosaur-like carcass that washed ashore on the island of Stronsay in the Orkney Islands in 1808. This scale-covered body had three pairs of legs, and was reported to be around 55 feet long, although a portion of the tail was missing. A bristley mane that ran down its back seemed to glow in the dark when wet. It was originally believed to be a new species, until anatomist Sir Everard Home from London determined that it only measured around 36 feet, and was actually the decaying remains of a Basking Shark.
